They say “the house always wins.” It doesn’t always win, of course, but there’s nothing better than a good generalization.
So, why do we refer to a casino as “the house”? Well, “casino” is Italian in origin, coming from the root word “casa,” meaning (wait for it) “house.”
Originally, it meant a villa or summerhouse, but over time it came to mean a building built for pleasure. In modern Italy, “casino” refers to brothels!
